The TBIS is a golfing society in Sussex with a group of around 50 people. TBIS Events are every 6-8 weeks and there is an ongoing 10 event tournament where players participate in the hope of winning the Race to the Stone.
The first-ever TBIS Ryder Mug at Seaford Head Golf Club proved to be a massive hit — with many calling it their favourite event to date. The new match play format was a clear winner among the 38 players who took to the fairways, competing for a prize pot of nearly £600.
The teams were easy to spot (mostly!) — the Seniors decked out in black and the Juniors in white, though a few of the younger players apparently “missed the memo.” Despite the brutal wind and challenging conditions, Seaford Head looked immaculate as ever, offering some of the most breathtaking coastal views in Sussex. The famous 18th hole once again lived up to its reputation, providing a dramatic finish to an unforgettable day.
Captains Wayne Newton (Juniors) and Alf Garnham (Seniors) led the way as the first group off the tee, braving the elements to set the tone. Wayne gave the Juniors an early boost by securing the first point of the day — but in the end, it was the Seniors who triumphed, lifting the very first TBIS Ryder Mug with a narrow 10.5 to 8.5 victory.
It all came down to the wire, with the final matches deciding the outcome as players and spectators gathered on the terrace to watch the last groups come in.
There were also some standout individual performances:
With back-to-back events featuring rain and 40mph+ winds, the TBIS crew has faced their fair share of tough conditions lately. Here’s hoping for calmer skies at the next event — set for Hill Barn Golf Club.
One thing’s for sure: the Ryder Mug has set a new standard for TBIS — and the countdown is already on for next year’s rematch!
